Nassau County Police detectives are investigating a robbery that took place shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28 at the Neiman Marcus location on Old Country Road in East Garden City.
Police said that four African-American women and a man were caught by security surveillance cameras entering the store’s handbag department. The man then used a pair of bolt cutters to cut the security wires that were holding the handbags to the shelves.
According to police, once the handbags were removed, each of the female suspects took off on foot and left the store.
A security officer confronted the women outside with the stolen bags, police said. At which point one of the suspects took out a small canister of alleged mace and sprayed it in the security guard’s face.
When approached inside the store by a different security guard, the male suspect raised the bolt cutters in a threatening manner toward the guard before fleeing in the opposite direction. The suspects were seen leaving the area in a Hyundai Santa Fe with the stolen handbags.
Police said that the security guard who was maced suffered pain and burning to his eyes. He had to be treated at a local hospital.
Anyone with information regarding the incident has been asked to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-244-TIPS.
